Christy Archibald, the owner of Christine Archibald Portrait Miniatures, is based in New York City. She has always been interested in portraits--the visual suggestion of a complicated character, and the narrative that is impliedand a number of years ago became drawn to portrait miniatures. Miniatures are complex pieces of art, with layers of meaning to them, which is what makes them so appealing. They are fine artthat is, portraits that were commissioned by the sitters from professional artists. However, their function combined both subject and object: They were simultaneously art, keepsake, symbol, costly ornament, and record of ancestry. Miniatures could be held for private perusal, or displayed on the wall for a more public viewing. The connection between sitter and viewer is both intimate and powerful, and often enhanced by the viewer's knowledge of the artist's background and oeuvre, as well as details of the sitter's life. Christy Archibald chooses miniatures for the collection based first on visual and emotional impact. Does the sitter provoke interest? Does the painting evoke a strong mood, or atmosphere? Fine workmanship, excellent condition and historical research is also emphasized. The quest is always for a piece of exceptional quality, and the goal is to build a consistently powerful collection, based on aesthetics, documentation, and value, to attract collectors for years to come. |
